COMMISSION & COLLABORATE

My favorite part about creating new music is the collaborative process that brings artistic visions, educational goals, celebratory occasions, musical skill, and a listening audience together to form a unique musical experience.

There are many reasons to commission a new piece, but here are a few questions to help:
 –  Are you a performer who would like to start commissioning new music for your instrument?
– Are you an educator who wants your students to learn about composing, experience the composition process, and try composing themselves?
– Are you the director of a church, community, or school ensemble who is looking for music to align with your goals and visions?
– Are you an individual who would like to commemorate a special occasion?
– Are you an artist who would like music to be part of your current project?

Commissioning a new work can be done by anyone and for many reasons. Whatever your reason, we can work together to create a new piece music.

Timeline:
The timeline of the commissioning process is flexible depending on the situation. I request that you contact me at least 9 months before the intended performance date. This is to ensure time for research, finding text, writing, editing, and the preparation of score parts. I am open to making exceptions on the timeframe under certain circumstances.

Fee:

Commissioning fees vary depending on many factors, such as instrumentation, duration, level of difficulty, and purpose for commissioning. The New Music USA industry standard guide (found here) is a good starting point, but there are many ways to find a mutually beneficial way to fulfill payment. Contact me to discuss fees and different funding options.

Rehearsals, Premiers, Performances:
I would love to attend every performance, every premier, and every rehearsal. Unfortunately, sometimes life, distance, and timing get in the way.
  • Rehearsals - If you are commissioning a new work, I love to attend at least one rehearsal early in the process to get to know the ensemble and one rehearsal toward the end to work on musical phrasing. I will make every possible arrangement to attend rehearsals within a reasonable distance, and Video Conferencing will be utilized in situations where in-person rehearsal is unavailable. If you are performing a piece and would like me to interact with your group, I offer in-person and video conferencing rehearsals, depending on the timing and distance. Contact me with questions regarding rehearsal attendance.
  • Premiers - Attending the premier of a commissioned work is of the utmost importance to me. Travel accommodations for attending a premier will be discussed in the contract agreement.
  • Performances - I do my best to attend as many performances of my work as possible. If you have purchased one of my pieces and intend on performing it at a future program, I would love to know about it! Contact me with information regarding your group and performance dates.
