Commissioned for the Grace University Lutheran Church Choir, Stephen Self, director, as part of the 2019-2020 Composer in Residence Program -Preview Score Matthew 2:2 “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to worship him? Program Note Asking, is a setting of Matthew 2:2 for Epiphany. I was drawn into this verse because of who is asking these questions. The Magi and Herod are asking in the story, but even now, the question of “where is the child?” is one asked by any who seek a life of Christian faith. The music reflects this concept of multiple people and generations seeking the child through contrast of independence and unity in the voices, and the use of undefined harmonic language emotes this question through time.
