Program Notes:
Murphy, North Carolina; Miami, Florida; Cedar Falls, IA; and Dallas, Texas, the four places the saxophonist Christopher Dickhaus lived before we met in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. When he asked me to write a piece for him, he brought this up as a potential inspiration for the work, and it became a great motivation. Using these locations as a jumping off point for each respective movement, I was able to draw inspiration from my experiences in each place, along with musical representations of these places to influence my composition. While musical “Easter Eggs” abound in this work for those who wish to do some critical listening, the piece stands on its own to explore a range of musical characteristics from excitement, to sincerity, to humor.
