Whitewater - an evening of music about Minnesota conservation - premiered August 24, 2024. This project is in collaboration with 10th Wave Chamber Music Collective, a Minnesota based musician-led ensemble. Instrumentation: Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Percussion, Piano, 2 Violins, Viola, Cello, Bass Program Note: In April 2021, I spent three days camping and turkey hunting in, and around, the Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. The Whitewater WMA is not the isolated wilderness that you may find in northern Minnesota, instead it is a diverse interspersion of forests, wetlands, farmlands, roads, and communities that create habitat for wildlife in conjunction with human presence. Being there, you witness the active management needed to conserve wildlife habitat and the thriving ecosystems that can be maintained through this diligent work. The multi-movement work, Whitewater, evokes the soundscape of trains, machinery, bird calls, and rustling leaves that soundtrack the experience of being in the WMA, and musically explores the complicated, but necessary, weighing of human needs and wildlife conservation.
